Preamble:
This is a milestone I was not looking forward to. I mean, my grandfather died at 64 when I was very young so my whole life the 60s were equated in my mind with the end of the line. Never mind that my dad is 83 and going strong. 60 was always the sign to me a real age. I can’t fool myself into thinking I am middle aged any more. It was time to “embrace the suck” and own it. So after 12 months of mental prep for this birthday I was really in a place to face it full on and own that 60 is who i am now. The plan was for a no-holds-barred take down of the PAX to show what I might still have at this age.
Listening to the wind howl around the house all night and the night-before-a-big-Q-jitters I didn’t sleep well. So when I got to the AO and saw the usual vehicles there for prerun and a few early arrivals it looked like a light crowd on a cold, windy day. The Pre-runners were running late so I took the PAX on a parade lap around the parking lot to allow them to catch up. As I started to give the opening disclaimer… for the first time. Then some more pre-runners came in… a BUNCH of pre-runners!
Having been surprised by a LARGE contingent of Alpha PAX, I was presented with a birthday gift: a woman’s size XL shirt proclaiming what we all knew was coming…
Warm-O-Rama:
So with the preliminaries out of the way, I gave a disclaimer that my mission today was to destroy the PAX. To leave them quivering in the shower at home where they would have to tell their M’s that a 60 year old did this. Well, this is F3 so you can always modify as necessary. But I’ll make fun of you! (Spoiler alert – no one went home a quivering pile of jelly. Maybe for 70….)

The Thang:
The actual Q I had planned was the Q we did. I had chosen something that scaled to 50 PAX so:
4 corners with teams
We counted off into 10 teams. The 4 corners of the parking lot provided the stops.
- 60 Squats
- 60 Merkins
- 60 Mountain Climbers
- 60 LBCs
Each PAX owed 60 of each exercise at each corner. But if you completed before your team mates you can help them out with extra reps. After completing the reps, run the loop around the parking lot all the way around past where you start to the next corner, think 1 1/4 loops. But, each time you pass the flag you owe 10 Burpees each PAX. So on the first round 60 of each exercise plus 50 Burpees (10 each lap plus one because after LBC you pass the flag twice). Somehow some PAX worked in more.
After round one, Groundhog Day kicked in. You know, the movie with Bill Murray? So we started over! Disclaimer, full warm up and split into groups again to return to the 4 corners for round 2. Deja Vu all over again.
The playlist for the morning was from rockers all in their 60s which meant an eclectic mix of 80s tunes:
Relax | Frankie Goes to Hollywood |
West End Girls | Pet Shop Boys |
Desire | U2 |
The Reflex | Duran Duran |
I Feel For You | Chaka Khan |
China Girl | David Bowie |
867-5309 | Tommy Tutone |
Hip to be Square | Huey Lewis and the News |
Walk This Way | Aerosmith |
Burning Down The House | Talking Heads |
Yeah, some of those are over 60s!

Men, I am humbled by your what you did for me today. No, I did not have any idea what you were up to and as someone said, I do monitor nearly every channel on Alpha Slack so you guys did a good job of secret keeping! Thank you all again not just for the crazy bedazzled shirt, food, drink and double respect shirt but thank you for showing what I can only call, in an unmanly way, affection for me. I am honored to be a part of this group and wouldn’t be any place but in the gloom with you guys when the clock strikes 0530. Thanks to those who traveled from near and far and donated for food and those crazy beards! I had a blast!
